Composition in Two Genres

Poster Rationale

Animal experimentation is used widespread amongst several cosmetic companies and people are not aware what those companies are. These companies include; Estee Lauder, Avon, and Maybelline to name a few. This poster is meant to frighten my audience of cosmetic users into avoiding using products that participate in animal experimentation. The animals that are being portrayed are shown as a powerful symbol of the mistreatment that animals live through from these companies.

Also, my audience includes cosmetic companies whom are using animal experimentation and want to begin developing products that are cruelty. It also can help to spread a message to cosmetic companies of how inhumane it is to use animals for their experiment. In hopes of this gruesome poster being spread, cosmetic companies may begin to open their eyes and create products that are animal testing free due to the controversy.

The poster was chosen as one of my genres because through a poster, a message can be interpreted clearly. For example in my poster, a scientist in a lab has a needle in his hand  with two cages of animals; one consisting of healthy bunnies that were untouched, while the other cage had bunnies that are used to test out the safety of the cosmetic products. Then to the left of the researcher there are the results of the products. It is shown that to produce products, animals have to be hurt.

Advertisement Rationale

Several Pharmaceutical companies distribute medicine that although benefit people, animals were harmed in the process. The practice of using animal testing on drugs is still used till today. The advertisement for  the “new pill” is meant to make people read everything on the label and be aware of the misconceptions that may be in bold letter on the bottle. Pharmaceutical companies mass produce these products and people happen to walk past the important descriptions that are needed to read.

My audience includes pharmaceutical companies who are looking to transition to animal testing free. Due to the advertisement showing the dark side of medication that is supposed to help people, pharmaceutical companies are transitioning to avoid controversy or lawsuits. Some pharmaceutical companies who perform animal testing may feel attacked from the advertisement since it is a mockery and simplified version of what companies are trying to say and hide.

Also, my audience includes consumers of those pills. This advertisement catches people attention when reading, “Next Big Thing”. Then people may proceed to see the actual pill name and remember that they take those pills for headaches. Then they realize the disclaimer, which states what happens when taking that pill. People may start to think that they should start reading labels more closely. This will promote people to consume less pills with animal testing on it once they read the labels.                                                                                                                               Advertisement is a great genre to use because you can manipulate anything you are advertising to convince the reader. For example, if you want to convince an individual a certain product is amazing, you make the video appealing to them.

Audience Strategy

The first genre to my composition is a poster. This poster will depict animal experimentation in a negative way in order to lure people to view and evaluate the poster. The poster can be composed of a graphic scenery of a cosmetic lab with a researcher faced away from the audience and a needle in his hand. Then as you look closer, there can be a pile of bunnies to the right shown as deformed and painted with swatches of cosmetic products such as eyeliner and powder. The reason for the explicit scenery is to allow the reader to see the researcher with the lab coat and the needle in his hand first and wonder why the man is holding that. The second component the viewer will notice is a pile of unknown objects to the right. This will lure them closer to the poster and that is when they will see the bunnies. The poster title can be, “In stock at your nearest pharmacy.”

The second genre that I am using is advertisement. The advertisement will be composed of an image of a pill that has terrible side effects and unknown side effects due to the use of animal testing. This can bring an emotion of being worried to my audience when reading what these pills that they are consuming in order to attract a larger crowd and inform them. I can start with revealing the pill with its name and version. Then I can reveal the side effects that pharmaceutical companies are not aware of and the harm it may cause. Then I can talk about the negative impact on animals and people from these companies, such as inaccurate testing and harm to animals.
